When it comes to the issue of inheritance in Corinne, or Italy there are a few things to consider, especially in the case of Oswald who I believe has inherited more than money. From the beginning, we have noticed how Oswald's relationship with his father has carried into his adult life and it is especially evident when he talks about his father's death. His father was adamant from the beginning how he felt about his son and the choices he should make in his private life, especially when it came to the woman who he should marry. Oswald ultimately inherited his father's ghost and it is when he talks to Corinne about his father and his expectations, as the reader, you can still see how he continues to affect the way he thinks and acts, "I did not know if such a daughter-in-law would be acceptable to my father. it never entered his head that i would marry a Frenchwoman and i did not want to do anything without his consent" (207). The inheritance of his father's ghost continued to change how he looked at his relationship with Corinne and later added to his decision to marry someone who his father would approve of if her were alive.
When talking about Corinne and inheritance it is clear, to me at least, that what she has inherited is Italy. She was the example of Italy because of the knowledge she possessed about the country and her ability to gain the interest of crowds. Her inheritance was what she left after she walked away from the crowds and Oswald. She impacted everyone she met by her ability to draw them into what she had to say, and this was clear when she acted inRomeo and Juliet and Oswald felt a need to tell everyone how he felt. Inheritance is great to look at from all sides because a person can inherit more than just monetary value, and it was clear that family and society also play a role in how and what we inherit.
